Children’s Utensil Packaging (Winner of Singapore Packaging Star Awards 2021)
Disciplines: Packaging Design, Sustainable Design
During the covid-19 pandemic, many people faced heightened stress due to the disruption of lifestyles. In the course of the two-month circuit breaker period, parents had to juggle working from home and supervising their child, Furthermore, they must ensure that the house is clean and that meals are promptly served at the dining table. Managing children who tend to wander and resist staying seated during mealtimes adds an extra layer of stress for parents.
“The story of your mealtime” is a utensil set packaging where the look and feel are based on beloved fairytale stories. To further engage a child, clothing pieces are included where they can play dress up with the utensils, a video based on the story is included to keep children engaged during mealtimes.
The project was designed and completed at Nanyang Polytechnic in 2021.
Based on an existing product packaging, I needed to select a packaging and determine how I could make it more sustainable while providing joy at the same time.
After much contemplation, I decided to focus on designing tableware items for children. Following my research on existing products in the market, I chose the Re-Play Utensils 4 sets Forks & Spoons, for which I generated 10 ideas.
I have also conducted user testing to deepen my understanding of children and identified key insights into how they interact with the packaging. Some child encountered challenges with removing the utensils from the packaging while others faced issues with the narrow openings for clothing pieces, resulting in inadequate security.
